AI, Mining and the Benefits of Specialized Screen Media

By Serge Raymond, MAJOR product specialist
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has revolutionized industries worldwide, from healthcare to manufacturing — and mining is no exception. The ability to analyze vast data sets enhances decision making and optimizes efficiency in many fields. However, as AI continues to advance, the demand for essential metals like lithium, aluminum, graphite and copper has increased. Copper, for example, enables electrical conductivity in circuit boards and wiring. However, before these materials reach the tech industry, they must be extracted, refined and processed, which begins at the mine. Meeting this demand requires mining operations to maximize efficiency and sustainability.
One way that mines can get the most out of their production is by investing in quality screen media, like FLEX-MAT, that can be customized for the type of metal being mined.
The Benefits of Screen Media
Screen media plays a crucial role in metal mining, facilitating efficient separation and processing. Knowing the composition of the material being screened makes it easier to be sure you’ve got the most effective screen media option. Each screen deck should be tailored to the specific properties of that material.
Certain screen media types help address the fines that lead to blinding and pegging commonly found in lighter metals like graphite and aluminum. High-vibration screen media offers an efficient solution to overcome this issue. FLEX-MAT features individual wires bonded to polyurethane strips. This facilitates high vibration, up to 10,000 cycles per minute, which is 13 times greater than traditional woven wire cloth.
Excess screen media wear from highly abrasive metals like lithium and copper is a different challenge. If wet, lithium can also become corrosive to any polyurethane or metal on the screen media. We recently released a new advanced polyurethane strip variant for these types of metals. The new polyurethane (PU) mixture features greater chemical stability to improve performance in harsh environments. Screen media with the updated PU strips might be best for operations that are seeing the polyurethane wearing out before the steel wire, affecting the integrity of the screen.
Not only does this mean getting more efficiency, but it also means you’re getting longer lifespan from your screen media and increasing the sustainability of your mining operation.
Looking to the Future
As AI continues to evolve, its influence will extend beyond mining operations. The manufacturing process for screen media is one such industry that we believe will, eventually, benefit heavily from artificial intelligence. Smart algorithms could analyze material composition in the future and recommend the most efficient screening process. Additionally, AI advancements in screen media manufacturing could further enhance product longevity and performance, both in the original manufacturing process and by predicting maintenance intervals.
For now, maximizing efficiency starts with choosing the right screen media for each individual operation. Whether you’re mining lithium, aluminum, graphite or copper, we’ve got something that can help. To learn more about how FLEX-MAT can benefit your mine, speak to our experts today.
